
The First Female Prime Minister of Aruba

​Evelyna Wever-Croes, LL.M. is the current Prime Minister of Aruba, a position she has held since November 17, 2017. As the first woman to ever hold this office, she has also served as the Minister of General Affairs, Integrity, Energy, Innovation, Infrastructure, Spacial Planning, and Government Organization, overseeing critical areas pivotal to the island's development. Her leadership is distinguished by a commitment to socio-economic resilience and innovation, particularly in response to challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic.​

Born and raised in Aruba, Mrs. Wever-Croes pursued her legal education at the University of the Netherlands Antilles, where she earned a Bachelor of Law degree in 1986. She then furthered her studies in the Netherlands, obtaining a Master’s degree in Tax Law from the University of Leiden. After returning to Aruba in 1989, she began her career in public service as a tax agent with the Aruba government tax department. By 1994, her dedication and expertise had led to her appointment as head of the department, a position she held for ten years.

In 2004, after a decade of distinguished public service, Mrs. Wever-Croes transitioned to the private sector as a tax lawyer at the Croes Wever Tchong law firm, where she managed numerous high-profile corporate tax cases both locally and internationally. In 2009, she was invited to join the political party Movimiento Electoral di Pueblo (MEP) as an official candidate. Following the general elections that year, she was sworn in as a member of parliament. By 2011, she had risen to the role of leader of MEP.

In the 2017 general election, Mrs. Wever-Croes led MEP to a significant victory, which enabled her to form a coalition government with the POR and RED parties. This marked the first coalition government in Aruba in over 15 years and led to her being sworn in as the first female Prime Minister of Aruba. Her leadership in this initial coalition laid the foundation for her subsequent term and reinforced her commitment to bringing innovative and inclusive governance to the island.

In the 2021 general election, Mrs. Wever-Croes’ party, MEP, secured nine seats in the Aruban Parliament. Following the election, she successfully formed a coalition government with the RAIZ party. This coalition, which has governed since 2021, reflects her ability to build consensus and foster collaboration within Aruba's political landscape.

Under her leadership, Aruba has embraced a vision centered on socio-economic resilience through innovation, with a focus on a human-centered approach to governance. She has aligned Aruba’s innovation strategy with the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, emphasizing the importance of placing the well-being of Aruban citizens at the heart of all policies. Mrs. Wever-Croes is a passionate advocate for social innovation and the empowerment of women in STEM fields, recognizing these as essential to building a sustainable future for the island.

On a personal level, Mrs. Wever-Croes is deeply devoted to her family. She is married, a proud mother of three children, and a grandmother to a six-year-old grandchild. Outside of her professional and family life, she finds joy in painting, a creative passion that allows her to express herself artistically and find balance amid her demanding responsibilities. Her commitment to her community is also evident through her involvement with Quota International, where she served as president of the Aruba board from 2009 to 2010.​​
