Prime Minister Co-Hosts Conference on Youth's Role for the Future with Jamaican Prime Minister at the United Nations

During the Summit of the Future at the United Nations, Prime Minister Evelyn Wever-Croes, representing Aruba and the Kingdom of the Netherlands, co-hosted a side-event conference with Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness. The focus of the conference was on the importance of youth in shaping the future, particularly in the context of the Declaration on Future Generations. This declaration explores solutions to safeguard the needs of future generations, addressing key issues such as demography, climate change, and sustainable development.

In her speech, Prime Minister Wever-Croes highlighted that while some nations are still recovering from the pandemic crisis, others face ongoing conflicts and wars. She pointed out that the world has become increasingly dangerous and unpredictable in recent years. However, she emphasized that every crisis presents an opportunity for change, and the Declaration on Future Generations alongside the Summit of the Future offers the chance for the global community to choose a different path.

The Prime Minister noted that the declaration not only stresses how interconnected global challenges—such as climate change and growing social inequality—are but also calls for a change in the status quo. It advocates for solidarity with every generation, ensuring that current leaders take responsibility for the well-being of those who will follow.

For small island nations like Aruba, Curaçao, and Sint Maarten, the declaration holds particular significance. Climate change could severely impact these islands, where a strong hurricane could devastate families for generations. Despite these challenges, Prime Minister Wever-Croes remained optimistic, expressing her belief that when the "Declaration on Future Generations" is put into action, it will lead to improved coordination and tangible results.
